Five Ways Roasters Cut Packaging Costs
- Order quarterly at 5K+ instead of monthly. 12oz pouches drop from $0.52 (1K) to $0.35 (5K). That's $850 in savings per 5,000 bags.
- Start with kraft. Kraft pouches cost 10-15% less than white/custom-color films and immediately communicate "artisan." Perfect for farmers market and DTC brands.
- Use MPET instead of full foil for local/DTC sales. Metalized film saves 15% per unit. If your coffee sells within 3-4 months of roast (DTC subscription model), you don't need 12-month barrier specs.
- Standardize on one bag size. Every unique size needs its own die. Running 12oz only (instead of 8oz + 12oz + 2lb) saves $400-$800 in tooling.
- Skip the tin unless it's a gift product. A 12oz tin at $1.80/unit costs 5x what a flat-bottom bag costs. Reserve tins for holiday editions and gift packs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a custom coffee bag cost for a new roaster?
$0.70/bag at 500 units (kraft pouch, 12oz, with valve and printing). Your first run of 500 custom bags costs about $350 total. At 1,000 bags, that drops to $0.48/bag ($480 total). Both include full custom printing and degassing valve.
Are kraft bags cheaper than printed bags?
About 10-15% cheaper. A 12oz kraft pouch runs $0.30/unit at 5K vs. $0.35 for a standard printed pouch. The savings come from fewer ink colors and no need for a white base layer on the film.
What's the cheapest way to get coffee bags with my logo?
1-2 color printing on kraft stand-up pouches at 1,000+ units: $0.42/bag. If you need to go below 500 units, we also offer stock bags with custom printed labels — bags at $0.15/unit + label at $0.08/unit = $0.23 total, but the quality doesn't compare to fully printed bags.
Do I really need a degassing valve?
If you're packaging freshly roasted beans (within 7 days of roast): yes, absolutely. No exceptions. If you're packaging pre-ground coffee or beans older than 14 days post-roast, the valve is still recommended but less critical. We include the valve in all coffee bag pricing by default.
