Food Packaging FAQ
Are your food boxes FDA compliant?
Yes. All food-contact packaging uses FDA 21 CFR-compliant materials — food-grade aqueous coatings, BPA-free inks, and SBS board manufactured under GMP conditions. We provide Certificates of Compliance on request. Materials are also EU food-contact safe (EC 1935/2004) for brands selling internationally.
What makes packaging food-grade vs regular?
Three things: the board itself must be manufactured in a food-safe facility (GMP-certified), the inks must be low-migration and BPA-free, and the interior coating must form a barrier against grease, moisture, and odor transfer. Standard packaging uses non-food-safe inks and uncoated board that can leach chemicals. Our food boxes pass FDA migration testing.
Do you offer grease-resistant food packaging?
Yes. Two levels: aqueous grease-resistant coating (handles moderate grease from cookies and pastries) and PE (polyethylene) lamination (handles heavy grease from fried foods, pizza, and oily snacks). PE-laminated board also provides moisture barrier. Both are FDA-compliant for direct food contact.
What is the minimum order for custom food boxes?
500 units for full-color offset-printed food boxes. Digital printing from 100 units for test runs and seasonal specials. Window patching (clear PET window) adds $0.03/unit. Grease-resistant coating included at no extra charge on all food-grade orders.
Can food packaging go in the microwave?
Standard SBS board with aqueous coating is microwave-safe for reheating (up to 2 minutes). PE-laminated board is NOT microwave-safe — the polyethylene can melt. For microwave-ready meal packaging, we use mineral-coated board that handles temperatures up to 400°F. Ask about our microwave-safe substrate options.
What window options are available for food boxes?
Two materials: PET (clear polyester, most common — recyclable, clear, and heat-resistant to 150°F) and PLA (plant-based bioplastic, compostable but not heat-resistant above 110°F). Window shapes include rectangular, oval, heart, and custom die-cut. Anti-fog coating available for refrigerated products that tend to cause condensation.
